  9. This README file contains supplemental information to help you install
  10. and use your printer driver software with Microsoft Windows 95.  As with
  11. most software and hardware products, some information is made available
  12. after the development of the manual.  Updated information regarding your
  13. printer is provided in this README file.  If you require additional

  34. ========
  35. This printer driver allows you to print documents from any Windows 95
  36. application to your Canon Bubble Jet printer.  This driver provides a
  37. variety of basic and advanced capabilities to give you high-speed and
  38. high-quality printed output and complete control over the printing process.  
  39. This driver includes several key features that are designed to for ease
  40. of use and flexibility:
  41.  
  42. 1. Automatic halftone and color adjustment selection
  43.    This feature allows the driver to select its own halftone and color
  44.    setup for the optimum print quality, based on the type of document
  45.    you are printing.  This eliminates the need to experiment with many
  46.    complex settings to achieve the best print quality.  You can use the
  47.    "Graphics" tab to select this feature.

  49. 2. Print Set-up Analyzer
  50.    This feature helps you to eliminate potential problems by checking
  51.    the driver selections and notifying you of any inconsistencies.  You
  52.    then have the option of correcting those problems before you proceed
  53.    with printing.  The Print Set-up Analyzer is enabled by default.  You
  54.    can use the "Setting" tab to disable it.

  56. 3. Saved Settings
  57.    This feature allows you to save and retrieve up to four setups.  You
  58.    can enter a name for each setup for easy identification.  You can use
  59.    the "Setting" tab to save and retrieve the setups.
  60.  
  61. 4. Remote Printer Controls
  62.    This feature allows you to perform certain maintenance and diagnostic
  63.    operations on your printer from within the driver.  If your printer model
  64.    supports this feature, you can use the "Control" tab to use it.

  67. System Requirements
  68. ===================
  69. The Canon BJ Series Windows Printer Driver does not require any additional
  70. system configuration beyond those required to run Windows 95.  However, you
  71. can improve the performance of your Canon printer if you:
  72.  
  73. 1. Increase the amount of RAM memory to more than 8 MB.  Increasing RAM memory
  74.    will result in faster printing and reduce compatibility problems with some
  75.    applications.  As an alternative, you can increase the amount of virtual
  76.    memory to reduce the possibility of "low memory" conditions (although this
  77.    does not improve printing performance).
  78. 2. Allow at least 5 MB of hard disk space on the drive that contains your
  79.    system's TEMP directory.

  82. Installing the Printer Driver into Windows 95
  83. ============================================= 
  84. To use this printer driver with software application packages that operate
  85. with Microsoft Windows 95, use the following installation procedure:
  86.   1. Start Windows 95 on your system.
  87.   2. Click on the "Start" button.
  88.   3. Point to the "Settings" item.
  89.   4. Click on the "Printers" item to display the Printers folder.
  90.   5. Double-click on the "Add Printer" icon to start the "Add Printer Wizard".
  91.   6. Click on the "Next" button.
  92.   7. Click on the "Have Disk" button.
  93.   8. Insert diskette #1 into the floppy disk drive of your computer system.
  94.      If the floppy disk drive is drive A, click on the "OK" button and
  95.      continue with the next step.  Otherwise, type the letter name of your
  96.      floppy disk drive (such as "B:") and then click on the "OK" button.
  97.   9. Follow the instructions of the Add Printer Wizard until the installation
  98.      is finished.  An icon for your printer will then appear in the Printers
  99.      folder.

  101. You are now ready to print from any Windows software application packages.
  102. If your printer model can print in color, the driver is automatically set for
  103. printing in color.  Otherwise, the driver is automatically set for grayscale
  104. printing.

  107. Accessing the Printer Properties Dialog Box
  108. ===========================================
  109. The Printer Properties dialog box contains several tabs that allow you to
  110. setup, control and maintain your Canon printer.  To access the Printer
  111. Properties dialog box, use the following procedure:
  112.   1. Click on the "Start" button.
  113.   2. Point to the "Settings" item.
  114.   3. Click on the "Printers" item to display the Printers folder.
  115.   4. Click on the icon for your printer to highlight it.
  116.   5. Click with the right mouse button on the icon, and then click with the
  117.      left mouse button on "Properties".
  118.  
  119. This will display the Printer Properties dialog box, which contains the
  120. following tabs:
  121.   General  - Lets you print a test page and define separator pages
  122.   Details  - Lets you define printer port assignments and spooler settings
  123.   Paper    - Lets you select paper size, orientation, media type and paper feed
  124.   Graphics - Lets you select print quality and color/monochrome mode
  125.   Setting  - Lets you enable or disable the Print Set-up Analyzer, Color Advisor
  126.              and Cartridge Notification, and save/restore all driver settings
  127.   Control  - Lets you perform setup & maintenance functions (only for certain
  128.              printer models)
  129.   Visual Guide - Lets you launch the On-Line Guide software (if it is installed)
  130.  
  131. You can also display the Printer Properties dialog box from within a software
  132. application by clicking on the Print item from the File menu, and then clicking
  133. on the Properties button.  In other applications, you can click on the Printer
  134. Setup item from the File menu and then click on the Setup button.  However, the
  135. General and Details tabs are not available in this mode.

  138. Accessing Help Information
  139. ==========================
  140. From the Printer Properties dialog box, you can click on the "Help" button to
  141. display additional information about every feature and option in the Canon
  142. printer driver.  You can also use the Windows 95 "What's This?" method, by
  143. using the right-mouse button to click on any item for information about that
  144. item and its operation.  Alternatively, you can click on the question-mark (?)
  145. symbol in the upper right corner of each dialog box, and then click on any 
  146. item to display help for that item.  In addition, a brief one-line message
  147. appears near the bottom of each tab to display information about each group
  148. of selections as you move your mouse cursor over them.

  151. Using the Print Set-up Analyzer
  152. ===============================
  153. This printer driver includes an automatic "Print Set-up Analyzer" to help you
  154. use your printer more efficiently.  The Print Set-up Analyzer identifies any
  155. inconsistencies in your setup selections, and allows you to correct them if 
  156. you wish.  By default, the Print Set-up Analyzer is enabled. You can disable
  157. it in the Setting tab of the Printer Properties dialog box.

  160. Hints for Color Printing
  161. ========================
  162. If your printer is capable of printing in color and uses interchangeable ink
  163. cartridges, be sure that a color ink cartridge is installed in the printer.
  164. You should also select the appropriate Print Model from the Graphics tab in
  165. the Printer Properties dialog box.
  166.  
  167. 1. Select the "Color" icon from the Color Model group on the Graphics tab.
  168. 2. Select the appropriate Print Model:
  169.    - Automatic selects the halftoning methods to produce optimum print quality
  170.      for all types of images
  171.    - Graphics and Text selects the halftoning methods to produce optimum print
  172.      quality for solid text and business graphics, with the emphasis on
  173.      enhancing color saturation
  174.    - Photo selects the halftoning method to produce optimum print quality for
  175.      scanned photographs or bitmapped images 
  176.    - Custom offers more advanced control over halftoning patterns, bit depth,
  177.      color adjustment and intensity.  These advanced options are not intended
  178.      for novice users of color printers.
  179.  
  180. Note: For optimum color matching with your screen, select the "Photo" setting
  181. as the Print Model in the Graphics tab, and use a higher quality media, such
  182. as Coated Paper or High Gloss Film.

  185. Hints for Monochrome Printing
  186. =============================
  187. All Canon Bubble Jet printer models are capable of printing in monochrome mode.
  188. If your printer is also capable of printing in color and uses interchangeable
  189. ink cartridges, you should install a black ink cartridge for better printing
  190. efficiency.  Then use the following procedure on your computer system:
  191.  
  192. 1. If you have a color printer, select the "Monochrome" icon from the Color
  193.    Model group on the Graphics tab (this selection is not available for 
  194.    monochrome-only printer models).
  195. 2. Select the appropriate Print Model:
  196.    - Automatic selects the halftoning methods to produce optimum print quality
  197.      for all types of images
  198.    - Graphics and Text selects the halftoning methods to produce optimum print
  199.      quality for solid text and business graphics
  200.    - Photo selects the halftoning method to produce optimum print quality for

  206. For Windows 3.0, 3.1 and 3.11
  207. =============================
  208. This printer driver does not support Windows versions 3.0, 3.1 and 3.11.
  209. Please contact your local Canon company to obtain a driver for these versions
  210. of Windows.

  212.  
  213. Cautions, Limitations and Restrictions
  214. =======================================
  215. 1. If your printer is capable of printing in color, do not attempt to print
  216.    in "Color" mode when a black ink cartridge is installed in your printer.
  217.    The results will be unpredictable.
  218.  
  219. 2. A known problem in Corel Mosaic Version 5.0 may cause incomplete printed
  220.    output.  Please contact Corel Corporation for an update.
  221.  
  222. 3. For the BJC-4100 and BJC-210 models, the Cartridge Notification feature
  223.    may not function if you have used the BJ Setup Utility to set the Printer
  224.    Control Mode to the "Automatic" mode.  To use the Cartridge Notification
  225.    feature, you should set the Printer Control Mode to either LQ or BJ mode.
  226.  
  227. 4. Some thin lines that are not solid black may not print using the driver's
  228.    default settings.  As a workaround, select the "Photo" setting as the Print
  229.    Model in the Graphics tab.  This will use an alternate dot-placement method
  230.    that produces better results.
  231.  
  232. 5. A known bug exists in Photoshop v3.0 for Windows that can cause white dots to
  233.    appear in printed bitmap images.  The problem is caused by Photoshop defining
  234.    an invalid background color.  To correct the problem, add the following two
  235.    lines to the WIN.INI file:
  236.  
  237.        [CanonDriver]
  238.        PhotoShopBugFix=1
  239.  
  240.    This will allow the driver to explicity set the background color to "white",
  241.    which matches the media color and corrects the bug.
